A delightful scenic drive along the West Coast of the South Island and through the Southern Alps
The Scenic Coast Road from Westport in the north through to Greymouth is rated as one of the best scenic drives in the World. Offering awesome seascapes and panoramic Coastal views, the road follows the rugged coast line occasionally turning inland to pass around mountainous regions or cross deep gorges and ravines.
Travelling south to Punakaiki and the well known limestone Pancake Rocks the road winds through native forest as you journey around impassable coastal hills and gullies before once again returning to the rugged shoreline and the awesome vistas all the way through Barrytown to Rapahoe and Greymouth.
From Inland Canterbury, the road passes through the Arthurs pass region of the Southern Alps. Combining these two spectacular routes with the Buller Gorge near Nelson, provides a superb day tour, and a way of transferring to Nelson from Christchurch or the Canterbury High Country or vice versa.
The trip takes between 5 & 7 hours with stops along the way to view the Punakaiki Rocks and enjoy lunch.
