Overview

A private two day exploration of the best the Nelson region has to offer, with its three National Parks and art, wine & culture. This two day trip with Simply Wild offers the opportunity to see much of Nelson in a relatively short time.

Nelson City is the second oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. Nelson is situated in a region often known as Nelson-Tasman or the “Top of the South.” It is actually slightly north of the capital city of Wellington.  Together with Richmond, it has a population of around 50,000 ranking it as New Zealand’s 10th most populous city and the geographical centre of the nation.

Nelson is a compact coastal city set amongst some of New Zealand’s most stunning scenery. The city is the economic and cultural centre for the Nelson-Tasman region and offers an excellent range of shopping, eating and cultural experiences with an abundance of parks, rivers, beaches and nature trails to explore. It is the place that most Kiwis would like to retire to – if they could afford to, since Nelson has some of the most unaffordable housing and lowest “sunshine” wages in New Zealand.

Nelson is named after British Admiral Lord Nelson and many streets and features are named after his naval battles and comrades. Nelson is New Zealand’s oldest city since, although it was proclaimed a Bishop’s See and city under letters patent by Queen Victoria on 27 September 1858 and after Christchurch‘s city charter, Pakeha settlement had started in earnest in Nelson in 1841, 9 years before the good ship  Charlotte-Jane arrived in Christchurch on 16 December 1850.

• Nelson is New Zealand’s sunniest city with over 2,500 sunshine hours per year.

• Nelson is the creative arts capital of NZ, with over 350 artists & craft studios and galleries. It is the origin of the world famous Wearable Art Awards, and has the excellent Wearable Art & Collectable Cars Museum.

Nelson is one of the leading wellness centres of NZ.

Nelson has the most craft breweries per capita in NZ.

Nelson has 25 boutique wineries producing award winning wines.

Nelson has great accommodation, cafés and restaurants.

The Nelson region contains two of New Zealand’s Nine Great Walks, The Abel Tasman Track and the Heaphy Track.

The Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand’s only coastal national park – and its golden sandy beaches and clear turquoise water make it one of the most popular. The sheltered bays are popular for cruising, sailing and sea kayaking. On land, the Abel Tasman Coast Track follows the coastline through lush native bush, over limestone cliffs and along golden sandy beaches.

Kahurangi National Park is the second largest National Park in New Zealand. It is Kahurangi’s heart of wilderness, centred on the Tasman mountains, that symbolises the special character of this national park. Some 570km of incredible tramping tracks span 452,000ha (1 Million acres) from Golden Bay in the north, south to Murchison and Tapawera, and to the West Coast of the South Island. Kahurangi is the home of the largest remaining population of Great Spotted Kiwi. Within this north-west corner of the South Island lie some of our oldest rocks, most spectacular marble and karst land forms and the most intact remnants of the peneplain landscapes that featured in New Zealand around 60 million years ago.

The Heaphy Track traverses from Golden Bay in the east to Karamea in the west, over craggy ranges, alpine meadows, valleys of tropical native palms, and ruggedly beautiful coastline. A plane or helicopter provides with you a bird’s eye view of this incredible landscape which includes remote sites filmed for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit  movies.

This two day private trip enables you enjoy and explore all of Nelson, while enjoying staying on our comfortable 50ft yacht for the night at Anchorage in the middle of The Abel Tasman National Park.

Itinerary

2 or 3 Day Premium nelson tour map

Day One

We collect you from your overnight accommodation in Nelson, or the airport and show you the City (Nelson was voted one of the top three “most charming small towns in the world” by TripAdvisor.com.) before visiting the Wearable Art and Collectable Car Museum. The museum provides interest for everyone, with international and local entries from Nelson’s famous Wearable Art Show on display, and an eclectic collection of over 100 cars ranging from vintage to current day. We’ll also transfer your overnight luggage to our yacht, which we’ll meet later in the day.

Because your trip is private, we’ll follow your interests, exploring and visiting some of the many artists and wineries in the region, or even providing you with a short easy cycle to the coastal village of Mapua along Nelson’s new “Great Taste Trail”. Around 4pm, we arrive at Kaiteriteri beach, on the edge of Able Tasman National Park, and meet our 50ft yacht, “Simply Wild”.

From Kaiteriteri it’s a 1 hour sail to Anchorage in the park. Anchorage is a sheltered bay with a wide sweep of golden sand beach, and on arrival you can swim or enjoy a walk on the beach before drinks and dinner on the yacht, prepared by our chef. Enjoy gently rocking to sleep in your comfortable cabin in the middle of the park.

Day Two

We’ll plan the day with you, and you can decide to walk a section of the Abel Tasman Track, sea kayak (at extra cost), or just relax, swim or sail up the coastline and enjoy this lovely coastal park. The choice is yours.

We’ll aim to be at Awaroa, in the northern section of the park around 3.30pm in the afternoon. Awaroa has an airstrip, and our light plane will be waiting to take you on a 3/4 hour scenic flight through the mountains of the nearby spectacular 500,000 hectare (million acre) Kahurangi National Park, before flying back to Nelson Airport. We reunite you with your luggage for your onward travel or transfer you to overnight accommodation.
